A ninth-grade teacher in Salem Junior High School in Salem, Utah, was called out on Wednesday when she gave about 60 World Civics students a "neat, colored, professional" propaganda poster for the Islamic State, to help students better understand the goals of terrorist groups and the methods they use to gain support." The New York Daily News noted that on the front page of the project is a discussion listing "8 Reasons Young Muslims Join ISIS."

ABC News reported that the teacher included a note asking students to step forward if the assignment made them comfortable, although one of them did.

Their parents, on the other hand, stepped forward, some of them finding the assignment inappropriate, especially after the recent attacks in Paris.

Annie Langston, a mother of one of the students told ABC, "We shouldn't be talking about how ISIS recruits, we should be discussing the events of what they have caused to figure a way of how to deter that and how to help better the world."

It is also alarming considering that the children will have to search for ISIS recruiting material on the web at a time when officials are looking for potential threats.

Lana Hiskey, spokeswoman for the Nebo School District where Salem Junior High is located said that the assignment has not been approved by school administrators. "As soon as the administration heard of this and reviewed the material, they immediately removed the assignment," she said.

The teacher, who is yet unnamed, said she was sorry about the assignment, and she was neither disciplined nor fired from her job, although she was instructed to cancel the assignment.

"She did this innocently, she's a naive young teacher. She wants to do the right thing," Hiskey explained.

The school also posted an apology via their Facebook page, which read, "Salem Junior High recently learned from concerned parents of an assignment regarding extremists use of propaganda to spread untruths and misunderstandings."

"Upon learning of this assignment, the administration reviewed the concerns with parents and teachers. After consultation, the assignment was immediately withdrawn. If parents have any concerns, please call the administration at Salem Junior High," she continued.

The comments below the post showed people either applauding or condemning the teacher, others saying it's good for children to learn about propaganda while others pointing out that there are other ways to do so without having the children research and draw recruitment posters for the terrorist group.
